The Longhouse: A Bold and Fluid Residential House

Reinterpreting Tradition for Modern Living

Inspired by the traditional Malay Longhouse, The Longhouse by Aamer Architects merges tropical language with contemporary lines and structure to create a unique and inviting residential space. With its communal living areas and innovative design, this house fosters family integration and provides a modern twist on traditional architecture.

Bold in form and fluid in function, The Longhouse takes inspiration from the traditional Iban Longhouse, known for its communal spaces. The bedroom wing of the house features rooms arranged in a linear fashion, opening out to a common play area. This design encourages family interaction and creates inviting spaces that draw the occupants out of their rooms.

The house's facade and presence from the main road are kept subtle and non-descriptive, providing only hints of what lies beyond. This inward-looking orientation adds an air of mystery and privacy to the residence. The design seamlessly merges the tropical language with contemporary lines and structure, creating a visually striking and functional living space.

Constructed with natural ventilation and sustainable materials such as timber, The Longhouse embodies modern architecture while maintaining a connection to its surroundings. The tubular forms and architectonic features of the house add to its unique charm and create a visually captivating structure.

With a land size of 1,100 m2 and a total floor area of 1,800 m2, The Longhouse is a spacious and luxurious residence. It is located in an area zoned for good class bungalows, providing a serene and exclusive living environment.

The construction of The Longhouse took 18 months and was completed in 2009. Throughout the design process, in-depth discussions were held with the owners to ensure that their wishes and requirements were met. The result is a tailor-made home that reflects the occupants' needs and desires.

The Longhouse has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019 in the category of Architecture, Building, and Structure Design. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

With its innovative design, communal living spaces, and seamless blend of tradition and modernity, The Longhouse stands as a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of Aamer Architects. It is a truly unique and inspiring residential house that redefines the concept of family living.
